A while ago I worked a lot in Dublin and the hypocrisy and double standards in which intelligent, lively people wrapped themselves struck me as mind-assaulting in a modern European country. Especially around sex. Several actor friends I worked with had been raised by the Christian Brothers and they often could not finish telling the stories of their time with the Brothers, they were so choked and haunted by the experience.
Which is why I can’t resist chucking my hat metaphorically in the air with glee to hear that Ex-Archbishop Oscar Romero (champion of the poor in Salvador) is on the way to sainthood (after being bumped off by the THE CHURCH) … on the same day that the Irish people have voted in favour of the equality of gay marriages. So here’s my plea…
The most generous act that the CATHOLIC CHURCH could now perform would be to disband itself. Historically, it is one of the nastiest institutions ever put together by human kind. About four per cent of all its activities are benign and of some use to somebody. Go private. All across the planet people have private beliefs that they don’t try to impose on other people. That’s sane, that’s acceptable; that’s healthy. That can be respected… Who’ll go first?
