Over-population is the basis of the present global financial crisis as well as the near-starvation condition of a sixth of the world’s people. There is no longer enough ‘stuff’ to be wrenched from our planet to make us all rich – but politicians and ‘experts’ are still telling their public that this is a temporary economic down-turn like all the past ones and we just have to take steps to come through it and then go on consuming and growing economically and breeding as before. At last, this fantasy of limitless growth may be coming to an end and we must help each other to grasp that no species can reproduce indefinitely, without collapsing, in a finite world.
For example, aid mainly produces people. Thus organisations like Oxfam go to poor people and hand out food, but refuse to explain that it will have the effect of the those people reproducing beyond the carrying capacity of their land – unless they take steps to limit their families AT THE SAME TIME. Then Oxfam looks back on its work, wringing their hands, saying that the situation in Africa is worse than ever – and they blame it on the failure of nations to hand out even more aid! Aid, without contraception and population-limitation advice, is very destructive. Tell your friends. Robert.
